Marine Algae of the Hawaiian Islands

Throughout the Hawaiian islands you will witness a plethora of colors adorning the land to the depths of the sea. Marine species that seem endless in abundance. Avian and botanical life that fill every inch of the land. Marine algae’s occupy a small coroner of the tidal and intertidal zones, yet they are an essential part of the marine ecosystems. Around the world marine algae play a vital role in capturing and regulation nutrients. They are also one of the larger sources of oxygen production on our planet. Simply put marine play a vital role in our own survival as a species. In a short time staying in Hawaii you will feel the love of the ocean and the land that the people living on the islands display. It is truly inspirational to see such compassion and caring for the local environments and the species that inhabit.

One of the local marine algae found on Maui and other islands is locally known as Limu Aki’aki. The marine algae is bright yellow to green in coloration. And is found in clumps along shallow tidal zones. Traditionally the algae has been used in food dishes and in medical treatments. The algae provides vital protection to juvenile species in shallow tidal areas that would be exposed to higher surf.

Phaeophyta (Turbinaria Ornata) This marine algae has light brown to yellowish coloration. Found in intertidal areas on many of the Hawaiian islands. Tends to clump together in thick mats. Erect stiff blades with spines. While the species is found through the pacific it is an invasive species elsewhere.
